A fire which started in the Murray house at Salem, 13 miles northeast of Ann Arbor, shortly after noon Tuesday, threatened the destruction of the town, and help was called for from Detroit. In an incredibly short time the Murray was a mass of flames and the fire spread to the Salem house, and from there to the residence of Mrs. Ham. The three buildings burned fiercely and were destroyed. Part of the contents of the hotels were saved.

The little hamlet has no fire department and the citizens worked like beavers as a bucket brigade. An appeal was sent to Detroit for help, Salem being on the Detroit, Grand Rapids & Western railroad, and an engine was sent out from that city, but before the engine reached there the flames were under control.

The loss was about $6,000, covered by insurance.
