The Herald correspondent at Alexandria, Effpt, ays that Lieutenant (Jownjander Grorringe, while rcinoving the foundation of Cleopatra's Needie, made a most interesting and highly important discovery, wbich will serve as a starting point for new re searches, and cannot ia.il to tlimw light, not only upon the origio of Freenjasonry, but upon the ancient mysteries of Isis aod Osiris. For the first time there has been discovered under a public monument, and, moreovcr, one erected 22 years before the Christian era, a foundotiou arranged according to tho customs of FreemnsoDry in such cases. 'nis foundation provesbeyood theantiquity f the organization of Masonic lodges, and iscloses eiiiblvius, .prirciples and customs (ientical with those whieh prevail to-day hroughout the four quarters of the globe. Jummander liorringe is a Freemason, and lis attemion was fint drawn to a niasonic quare cut out of an immense block of graote. The square bears upon the interior iase three degrees, correpondiiig to the bree tirt Masonio gradas. Under the siuare are three steps, correponding to the degrees of apprentice, companion and mastur. The three steps are isposed as follows : That corresponding to he apprentice degree is made of one stone; ,he other two steps, oorresponding to desees of compauion aud master, are formed if a single stone, indicating the intímate unión between the two degiees. The step yijifying the companion degree is much smaller than die cnrresponding to apprenice degree as considerably .'-maller than hal emblematic of the master degree, as it anoientlyaequired less time toattain science han to ferve apprenticei-hip. Outside ot the square a block was found laving lour facen, most beautifully and accurately dressed. The block is Masonic eyond doubt, lt is the sniooth ashlar. It s niarked '"Loga," whieh in Sanscrit ni una the world. The anctents believed he world to be rectangular in form. A )lock was found indented toward the west, chipped as f by design. This is a rough aduar. Instead of being eituated toward the ea-it, wheuce the light comes, which is the pymbol of intelligence, the rough stone is placed toward the wtst, where darkness, the symbul of ignorauce, reigns. The btone representa apprenticeship, and the is emblematic of human imperfection. There are also further proofs in the Masonic arrangement of the base of tho needie, öhowing that the aueients possesed degrees nigher than tho.-e of apprentice. The lower step ia formcd of 18 blocks, and among these was found the cubic stone and another of peculiar formation and of the purest and most brilliant whitenets. No one who has 8een thia itoi:e remetubers to have seen a similar one. The stt ne is evidently au emblera of purity. The stones of tho foundation are, with a solitary exception, laid in white mortarand finely dressed. The suiooth ashlar is laid n beautilul yellow cement. The stonea are of difieren t colors, and are joined with cement, indicating the unity of all Masons. The ancient nionuinents of Egypt have never been carufully examined froui a Masonic standpoint, and it is most likely that if excavations were made about the bases of some of the fallen obelisks, such exoavations would be ciowned with most important results, ami additional light and further proofs would be obtained, which, in connection with Commander Gorringe's discovery, would lead to the folution of many Egyptian mysteries.
