Id Thatchef s Military Journal, under date it' December, 1777. is found a note containing tho idéntica! "first prayer in congress," made by the liev. Jacob Duche, a gentleman of' great eloquenee. 1 lere it is - an historica! curiosity : "O Lord, our Heavenly Father, high and mighty King of Kings and Lord of Lords, who dost trom Thy throne behold all the dwellers of the earth, and reignest witli power siipriíino and uuuontrolled over all the kingdome, empírea and governments, look down in mercv, we beseech Thee, on these American state, who have fled to Thee froiu the rod of the oppressor, and thrown themselves on Thy gracious protection, desiring to bo henceforth dependent only on Thee. To Theo they have appealed tbr the rightenusness ot' their cause : to Thee do they now look up for that countenance and support whk:h Thou alone eunst give. Takethem, therefore, Heavenly Father, unto thy nurturing care. Give tluin wisdom in council aud valor in the field. Defeat the malicious designs of our adversarios ; convineo them of tho unrighteousnens of theircause ; and, if they still persist insanguinary pürpOMt, oh I let the voice of Thine own unerring justioe, sounding in thtir bearta, eoostraib them to drop the weapons of war from their unnerved hands in the day of battle. Be Thou present, O God of wisdom, and direct the council of this honorable assenibly. Enable th;tn to settle thing on the bebt and sureüt foundation, that tho Hcenes of blood niay be speedily closed, and order, harmony and peace may be effectually re.stored, and truth andjustice, religión and piety provail and flounsb anioupst Thy people. Preserve the hoalth of their boilies and tho vigor of their uiinds ; shower down upon them and the millions they hyre reprepont, sucli tempered blcssings as Thou seost expedieut foor them in this world, and crown them with everlasting glory in the world to come.
