Whittier On The Campaign
l)ANVJB8,íUi,;th rao., 1880. Hou. Cí. W. Late, Amesbury : Dear Frlend : I regret to fiad tliat I eannot, as 1 iuteoded, bu preseut ut the lormatiouofa republiean club for Amesbury and Salisbury on the 7th instant. I must not, however, lot the oeoasion pass without expressing my heaity sympathy with the movement, and my dcsire to co-operate with you ia jour labors, in support of a crndidate of pure character, wise statesmanship and hfe long fidelity to the principies of the republican party, the uiiion of the stiiio.i and the security of the rights of persoo, property, and franchise. For mytelf, I wuuld gladly find an excuse for rotiring froiu active participation in the coming election, and would welcouie with MrpieU ibio rgliei' aoy ducided mauifututiuu of a more gcueral and colightened pulicy on the part of demócrata toward thu peoplo of color. But I look in yain for any good ovidence of a change which would justiiy relazatiou of zcal and vigilance on our part. I have uo wordd of personal disparugeiuent of the democratie uominee, and I do f 'uil juslicc lo the bincerily and patriotism of many of nis supporters, but, as a rulo, the party roiuains as it was at the close of thu war. The time has not couie whon it will be safe to eutrust thu flnanoial interests of the country, aud tho welfare of' the coiancipated class, to a party whose president can only be elocted by compromise with the greenback hereny, and the virtual suppre.ssiou by fraud and violence of llie votes of the southern citizeua of the southern states. Masnachusettr! is not a doubtful stuie. Her vote will be givcu to the republican iiniiiinee. But let us i-oe to it that her voice at the coming election has the strong cuiphasis of the days of Sumner, Wilson and Andrew. Thy friend, JOHN Q. MlUTlIKll. A poluieal party should be judged üko an individual, not by professions but by acts. Look over the dauiuing record of the democratie party fur lbo last twenty years, and sec it theie is a shaduw of ground for bchoving that it will carry out lts sugar coated prumisos 'tí given power in the nation.
