The Hudson rivcr tunnel, in wliioh the hcart-rending disaster occurred a few days ago, is oiio of the most important works of' tbc kind ever attemptcd in thïs country. After a long üght to secure charters from the New York and New Jersey leginlatures, the Hudson tunnel company rccontly bogan the workof tunneling the North river, trom the f'oot of Morton street, in New York, to pier No. 9, Jersey City. Col. 1. C. Baskin is president of the company, which has a capital of $10,000,000. Whcn the tunnel u oompleted, tho Dolawarc, Laokawatina ifc Vestern, the New Jersey Central and tho Erie railroadn will earry their iiasscngers undor the river froiu Jersey City, landing tliein in New York, thus saviog the aunoyanuü and loss of' time now exporienoed in (Tossing the ferry. Thowhole length of the tunnel will be two and one-half miles becauso tlie New York terminus will be taken to IJroadway, in the vioinity of Blccker street, and the New Jersey terminus will bo carried back nearly to Bergen Heights. It will be couipleted in 1883, with douMe tracks, and will be usoil only Cr paásongers bWóess, the coaches beinc driven witii oompresaed air, wliich will mako the distunce in six mioutOS.
