Mn. Julia Ward (Iowe re-.-ently delivered a long lecture beforo the Conoord school of philosophy, at Boston, on "Modern Society." Slie most forcef'ully pointcd out and condemned some of the follies of social intercourse, as seen in the woruen of society today. Many a wornan will pass for elegant in a ball-room, or even at a court drawingroom, whose want of true breeding would becoine evident in a chosen company. The reason why education ij usually so poor among womon of fashion is that it is not needed for the life they elect to lead. The arrogance and supreTaacy of the dresstnakcr of today are strongly portrayed. Thefashionable wouien say to her : " Do how you will wilh me. Make me modest or ianuodest. Tie up iny (eet or straighten my arras till the use of them beconies impossible. Deprive ruy figure of all the drapery or upholster it like a window frame. Nay, set me in the iniddle of a movable tent, butarray me so pcople shall look at me and say I look well." Mrs. Howe further scathingly and powerfully robuked that .slavish fashion of today, which slie said seeuis to have inventcd in order to intensify that selfconsciousness which is the worst eneiny of beauty.
