Aa we have previously annouoced, V. S. Benhain, of the Urand Haven Herald, and his wife, Sarah Louise, were both passengers on the ill-fated Alpena, and consequently found a grave with the waters of Lake Michigan for their shroud. Whitman S. Benham was boni in New York, Feb. 9th, 1826. He was a prominent educator in western New York when a young man ; was afterwardn aduiitted to the bar ; went to California when the gold fever raged, where he remained three years ; returning he was given charge of D. Appleton & Co. 's business in the west, with headquarters at Chicago. He was married to Sarah Louise Bates, Feb. 9th, 1856, and scttled at Peru, Indiana, and in 1861 became the editor of the Peru Republican ; in June, 1868, he became proprietor of the Free Press, at Newton, Iowa ; and on June 30th, 1877, he assumed control of the Grand Haven Herald, where he remained until his sad death. He has buen a fearles, outspoken, brave man, ever ready to defend the right against the wrong, no matter how unpopular such action might be. He was one of the true noblemen of the earth. It will be remembered that during the strife in this city, of the crippled soldier against, the nionied aristocrajy who sought to crush him, the Herald gave no uncertain sound. Ia its issue of Dec. 8, 1879, was the followihg paragraph : "In our supplement this week we glve a history of the unlverslty trouble, which seeius now to be ended. Mr. Beal is entlled togreat credit for hiH perseverance and Deeuniary sacrlrlces in behalf of hisfrlend, Dr. Koe. Asa matter of bistorical record, ia which the port each played Is graphlealiy descrlbed, and the POBitioii In which Douglas and thers oare left belore the public of the stat Is uot to be envled, nor tfieir ponduct emulated. With this lesson before the oIDcers of the univenlty , we trust, in the future, llke causes wil! he avoided, and peace and Justlce dweil wlthln the walls of Mlchlgan'H great eUuuaUonat üiHlltute." A son and daughter are left to mourn the loss of these loving, kind parents.
