Ex-Regent Maltz was defeated for the legislature, but ho run ahcad of tho rest of the rupublican ticket. The Couiueb. believes the bitter attack iuaduupoD Judge Harriman, charginghini with taking illegal fees, gave him quite a number of' votes, for it is a well known fact, that he lias taken no fces that his republican predecesor did not take. Joe T. Jacobs run just 220 votes ahead of the Garfield electora in this eounty, and ii' it had been known lliat Dunster, Cooley, Adauis, D'Ooge, & Uo. were renewing and keeping np tlic university fight, his maj irity would have been l,0()0 in the eounty. Wu regret the defeat of {illiam B. DePew, of Chelsea, for he is a worthy young man. No stronger nomination could hivo been made thati his. His defeat is duo to two causes : lst, the popularity of his opponent, who had diacharged the duties of the office for four years to tli : Mtia&cüon of thosc doing business with him ; 2d, to the too earnest support of cortain wen in this city, who ruin everything they touch. His defeat is no disgrace tohim under the circumstances. And now John Kelly, of Xew York, is the scape goat for the failure of the demoerats to elect their ticket. They are all cursv ing him, f'rom Maioe to California, and propose to kick him out of the party. II' he is kicked out of' that party, the Lord only knows where he will go to, for the republicaus don't want him. According to the stories told, he is rendering them excellent service where he is, on the principie that "when roeues fall out honest men get their dues." Kelly and Tildón fight and the republicans profit by it. But the republicans caine near "scooping" out John Kelley and his city government at (he last elcction just the same Nearly all of the close district have come out favorably for the republicans so that the majority in the next house will be :it least tm, prdbably more.
