Not even a lawyer, however skilled n eross-examination, can make a witness teil the truth, provided the witness wishes to evade it. It is uipossible to put a question in such exact language tliat it will deiuand the desired answer. It was neoessary on a certain occasion in court to oompel a witness to testify as to the way in which Mr. Smith treated his horse. " VVell, sir," said the lawyer, wit asweetsmile- asiuile intended to drown all suspicion as to ulterior purposes-" how does Mr. Smith generally ride a horse?" The witness looked up innocently and replied : "Oenerally astrddle, sir, I believe." The lawyer anked again : " But, sir, what gaitdoes he ride?" The imperturbable witness answered : 11 He nover lides any gate at all, sir, but ['ve seen his boy ride every gate on the farm." The lawyer saw he was on the track of a Tartar, and his next qucsüun was very inninuating. "Howdoes Mr. Sinith ridewhenhe is in company witli othera? I demsnd a clear answer.
