Dr. Adarns of the theological school al Nothota, Wiseonsin, io a comtnunicatioti on universities and colleges in the lasi number of the Churchiuan says there good words for our state university : And now we must say that the national instinct of the American people is very decidedly, in another direetiou secking afler the true solution. lt is searebing out what a university really is and what a col lege is, and we delieve will find it out, and the problem be solved, and that in the interest of the uighest education. The line of movcment towhichweal lude is the institution of a state university, one university in the state, and that one to aim at teaching all knowledge ; to have the ablext professors, not only in Greek and liitin, but in all languai;es in which there ;sany element or soit of knowledge or science ; aud also to havo professors of all soiences, abstract and tpplied, of all arts which man can leara and use to the benefit of man and bis own profit lawfully. To have for these uses gathered together all the necessary equiptueuts and appliamvs lor students and professors. And lastly to have all these within a smal! and healthy city of the state ; and then to give all the young men of the state all these advan tages at a very small expense, or even free. .Michigan university ia most distinctly the leader in a cau-er ihat every state in tbc union will yet enter upon. And I suppose that even the most enthusiastic frinda of that inatitution are herdly aware what a great and ancien t gystem they have reorganized in tbis lyth century, and what ¦ treniendous developement in the future is in tton for thetu io the growth and in creue oflauming, in the gathering together in one place of multitud)- of men of extraordinary abilitiy in all .sciem-cs, :ill arts and all kpowledge ; aud above all m the iniillitu'iinom increase of students, so ;n to bo a city population of thcmsclv es.
