.Last slimmer when tliu people culmly review ed the Senatorial career of Senator Ferry they prononoced t good. Tu voice tliis sent ment they nomiuated representatives who rere u favor of liis re-election and n many instances thcy instructeü these delegates to vote for him. It was then Ilie almost universal wish that he iniglitsucceed himself In thesenate. Since Ihat. time he has done notliing to forfeit our respect for hiin, neither has anything against him, and hitherto hidden, been broqgbt to light. Yet, notwithstanding this, in certain qnartersa loud cry is raised against him. We look to see the cause of this, and tind it to haveoriginated with u man who was at rtrst moved by ambition; afterwards, that being useless, by petty spite. This man looked about for tools to aceomplish his ends and wlth a keen knowledge of human nature gome hegained by his own old tempter, Ambition ; others he stirred up by feelings of fancied wronga, and still another class he won by cupidity. These were, in many cases, inüuential men whom he envenomed and with theni arrayed, notin line but scattered as bushwhackers he led the siauglit against the forcea of Ferry. They lirst demanded a delay or the caucus and to satisfy them it was not held Tuesday or Wednesday evcning according to precedent, bul deferred to Thursdny. In this cauensof a majority of the Republicana, Air. Ferry rccoived the unanimous noniiuation, but even then the facticus niinoritj- were bent on rule or ruin, and nnder the specious charge of "machineism" and "bosaism," trumped up tor the occasion, tliey went abroad and sought to inflame the minds of the people, so that that in, turn miglit be eommunicated to the representatives. To a degree they have succeeded, but the calni, cool judgnient of the people last summer stands opposed to tlie heated sentiment now manufactured 'or the mob by 8elf-seeking politicians. [n this case can there be any doubt as to the true criterion of right ana juati We believe not, and tor this and other reasons hope to see Senator Ferry reelected.
