í Ia Ann Arbor there are now 79 instn menls connected with the Central office and over eighty subscribers. New subscri bers are being acquired and with ever addition the instrument of coursebecome more raluable to the subscribers. A visi to the Central office gives one Bomethin of an idea of the large use of the telephon in our city, which has already become al most a neccsMtty to those hnving t, as i saresgo much time, trouble and misunder standing. The folio wing interesting f acts concerning the telephone we quote from th Detroit Erening News : " There re now 43 telepbone exchanges in operation now in thii State, 18 of which were conrtructed this year, riz., at Battle Creek, Coldwater, Houghton, Hillsdale, Marquette, Ishpemnjr, Negaunee, Hancock, Calumet, Montague (andWhitehall), Menominee, Nilea, Pontiac, Tecumieli, ïhree Rivers and Monroe. Ther are also 820 miles of connecting linea in operation, bringingtowns into conimunication with each other. TUere will be f rom 20 to 25 new ex changesorganized and equlpped next year and a large number of towns will be connected to systema now in operation, The placea now in direct telephone conimunication with the Detroit gyatem are as follow: LeesTille, Koseyille, Mt. Ciernen?, Marine City, St. Clalr, MarysTille, Idlewild Park, Port Huron, Lexington, Croswell, Carsonville, Sandusky, Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, Delhi Mills, Dexter, Saline. Tecuinseh, Adrián, Pinckney, Jackson, Chelaea, OrassLake, Monroe, Flat Rock, Toledo, Pontiac Biriningham, Royal Oak, Clarkiton, Ilolly, Flint and Windsor. There are aUo 15 towng in the western part of the State connected by Unes centering at Grand Rapids. The total number of subscribers in the State is 5,620, repreéentinff an aggregate of about 8,000 Instruments in use, and all present indications point to a rapid and wonderful extensión of the business in alljparU of the State. The management of thete lines as well ai the construction and malntenance thereof Is controlled by the Detroit telephone aad telegraph construction company, of which Ü. W. Balch U president, Hugh McMillan secretary and treasurer, and VV. A. Jackson general manager."
