From Charles J. Kintner, chief clerk oi we hare reoelved the official gazette of the U. S. Patent Office at Washington, that office in which is the animal report of the Commissioner of Patenta. F rom it we notice tlmt of the 17,861 patentó issned to citizens of the U. 8.. 637 were to residente of Michigan. ThU would niake the ratio of population to ej.ch patent granted 2,509. The business of the office is very mpidly increasinp, as will be seen trom the table which shows the number of applications for 1880 were in round numbers, 23,000; in 1881, 26,000, and in 1882, 31,500. From tht cash received there was a surplus of over $325,300. This shows jjreat acdvity in the minda f our countrymen and it may be noted, as an itidicatiou of the direciion of this display of genius, that there were more applications for patents based on electricity than fbr any other thing.
