"The genend impression prevails inthis state," saidthe reporter, "that Frank James will bo tried bef ore the Missouri courts with tho understanding that ho will be pardoned if convieted. What do you say to that?" The governor arose, looked the reporter squarely in the eye, and repliecl in a quiekvoiee: "That impression 3 erroneous and anjost. Frank James bas no such promiso, and no man can gainsay rny word. I am sorry to say that thè supposition of which you speak prevails all over the United States; bnt only the ignorant and uninformed entertain such crude ideas." After thi.s rather singular declaration of the ignorancc and crudeness which "prevails all over the United States," the Governot went on to say that he would never divulge the name of tne person whose information led to the breaking up of the James gang; that he would always regard Jesse James as a man of remarkable genius, and that he liad "a tender svranathv for the fato of Clarauce and Wood Hito," who wero once "moüei young men."
