The Evening News is printing every day what it claims to be " popular sentiment" in the state, regarding the recent verdict given In the Maclean-Scripps case. We were prepared to see Brothor Applegate earnestly defend his personal frieiid, but we werc not ready to see him, in the meantime, so libel the other papers in the state as to cali the most of them "obscure sheets, whicli see only the News, not being of enough Importance to enjoy the privilege of an exchange with the leading Detroit dailies." On our own exehange list we have a fair representaron of the papers in the state, and in looking them over this week we have observed that the Adrián Daily is about the only influential paper outside of Detroit defending the surprising verdict of the jury. On the other hand, among what the Times calis "obscure sheets," we have noticed, an almost unanimous condemuation of the result of the trial froni the state press. This is only about a sixth part of the whole number of papers In the state, but the ratio of pros and cons will undoubtedly remain the same, and we are confident that were the bandage of the strong bias of f riendship taken from the eyes of the Times' editor, he could not but acknowledge that many of the above mentioned papers, are as influential even as his own, and that in the above lists his own paper looks very lonesome. At anyrate it must be acknowledged that it is a hard charge to make to say that this vast cloud of wltneues is composed elther of " obscure sheets1' or those whose "articles are written in the same interest." It niiiy be all well enough for blind pjirtiziiuahip to pervert facts, but as a general tliiiig it will be considered as reprehensible as thegarbhng of articles quoted trom other papers, a la Post and Tribune and Free Press. We refer to their course since the verdict was given, wherein they have taken extracta from other papers, ascribing to thera opinions entirely foreign to the idea and tenor of their articles.
