A little Incident occurred at the jail Friday even ing which carne near being a tragic one. As deputy sheriff, Fred W allace, went into the jail at six o'clock to arrange for the upper, he was accosted by a man, one of whose nam es is Johnson, who grabbed him and after puiling hiin into the corridor he broke away and ran out into the hall to make his escape. The fellow was just on the point of running through the outside doorway when Wallace shot at him. The prisoner was about forty feet distant, but the bullet took effect between the shouldsrs. He at once dropped and rolled down the steps. When picked up it was seen that the bullet had just grazed hls spinal column, and the whole lower part of his body was paralysed. Fr several days it was not expected that he coulü live, and his motlier and other reiatives were telegraphed for, but they did not come. He had been committed to jail on the 7th of April on a charge of forgery and, we understand, had frequently made thieats of doing anythitig toescape. He ¦Is a tall, dark-complexioned fellow, about twenty-three years old.
