There is apparently a good opening for competent teachers in California, judging from the iollowing verbatim copy of a composition on Nevada County, written by an applicant for a teacher's certifícate and presented to the county board of education: "Nevada County is situated in the -west part of California. It is a mountainous county, and also there is agricalture carried to a great extent. It is dived, into a number of towns and villagcs; it is bounded on the east by Placer County; it has one river which I might mention : 'Bear River, many small creeks, and ets. There are many large churches, theatres and other public buildings. 1 must say it is one of the finest system, of public school that there is in the State. lts people are thrifty, energetic and God-fearing people. There occupation are hydraulicing, agriculturing, fishing, mining and school-teaching. There are all kinds of scenery, that any one would expect to sec in a mountainous county ; tlie green field of vvaving wheat and corn, its vegetable gardens, fine residence and surroumling grounds. The mountains present themselves robed in a mantle of white, herc a lone tree on a high bowlder reprepresenting true manliness. The principal cities of note are Nevada City, Grass Valley, San Juan and Dutch Flat. The first mentioned is of principal note because the courthouse is situated in said city and it is the county seat; the next is a very pretty green valley, where the air is pure and heallhful; the princ'pal occupation is mining."
