It is one of the noblest acts of courtesy when one nation shows its regard for another in a distinguished manner. It is sometimes in special honors to embassatlors and sometimes in presentations of lasting memorials. Such an act is France tloing in giving us the colossal bronze statute of "Liberty Enlightening the World." Bartholdi, the French sculptor with a Frenchman's love and enthusiasm for Liberty, conceived the idea of a statue to the Goddess of America which would rival his other great work the wonderful slatue of "Bayaria" in Munich. By its design it is intended for a lighthouse, and it is to be placed on an island in New York haibor with a light in the raised right hand, where it wïll be the first thing seen by those flying from foreign oppression to "The land of the Free and the home of the Brave". Bartholdi was one of the French commissioners to the Centennial and he returned to his country with renewed zcal to prosecute the work. He at once set about raising popular subscriptions, even pledgisg his own fortune and lie was not long in securingthe $250,000 necessary. The casting was commenced and it is now about completed and ready to be sent to tuis country. It remains for us as a people in accepting it to raise by popular subscription the amount required for a solid pedestal. Private individuáis have ofl'ered to paj" for this, or the Government might vote an appropriation for it, but this would not so well conform to the idea of the kind donors who as a people present it to the whole country. So the plan of popular subscriptions has been adopted and in the most of our cities committees have been appointed to receive the funds. Detroit, Bay City, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and other cities in the state have such committies composed of leading cities and Ann Arbor shoiild not be beliind her neighbors. It would be well to take some action.
