Centuries ngo, in tlie stone or bronze age, when the world was in long clothes' and its lntelieotiial progress of necessity slow, the inbabitants of our or any other country might have compiled a Cyclopedia tliat would have scrverl for onegeneration at least, or the aged mound builder night even perhaps have Iain down to his ashy bed feeling satistied tbat the Cyclopedia conferred upon liis tribe would remain ampie aulhority upon all questlons of interest, save birth and deatb, until the extinction of the tribe. Not so to-day. In the mad wiiirl of ihe present century, events follow events so rapidly, invertions and discoveries are so inany and important, scientific researches so deep and inquisitive that a Cyclopedia that is issued tor all time soon beeomes obsolete. This difflculty is obviated in the case of Appleton's Cyclopedia. They issue each year an animal volume. In them are chronicled with remai kable fullness and aecuracy the doings of the world in that year, so that the man that lias Appleton is always abreast of the world. Ho one has any fresberlntelHgence, and few men have occasion to pui chase a new Cyclopedia. To praise this Standard and well known work would be somewhat llke praising the wheat erop or summcr weatner or any other jood thing that comes as a product ol the torces of nature. It has been so Ung the standard of America that we take it as we docoffee for breakfasl. It ought to be iu every gentleman'g library and on every rclereuce table. A public library without Appleton's Cyclopedia would be as impossible as an oíd niaid tea party without gossip. The terms upon wbicll you can g-et thia great work are so easy that it is within the reach of alinost every person. The entire work, twenlyfoiir volumes, comes to you within ft've days after giving the order. Ou recelpt of ityou are only asked to pay for two volumes. Once in a nionth some one will ask you to pay for one, thus giving you two years to pay for it, and in your possession all the time. No interest, no note, nothing that can in any way disturb your finances. It would secm that after subscribing for your home newspaper your next duty will be to subscribe for Appleton. If the matter shoukl strike you in that form, you will please send postal or cali and sec J. II.
