Llterary Kotlces. We are n receipt of a 90 octavo-page book of War Songs, by Oliver Ditson & Co., Boston. It contains songs for anniversaries, and gatberings of soldiers, together with a selection of songs and liymns for memorial day, the rausic being arranged fof male voices, with accompaniment for piano or organ. Price, 50 cents. The North American Review for October presentí an attractive table of contents. Senator N..P. Hill writes of "Gold and Silver as Standards of Value," and Qiaintains that silver should be coined as well as gold. And, in " Some Aspects ofDemonracv in England," A. V. Dicey makes clear to the American reader how it is that public opinión absolutely controls the action of the goveinment. "Co-opeiative Distribution," by Dr. K. IleberNeivto:i. Prof. W. The frontispiece portrait of Washington illustrates the opening article of the nuinber- " The last days of Washington's Army at Newburgh," by J. T. Headley. While among other papers, Mrs. Z. B. Gustafson contri!: - utes one on Nicaise de Keyser, of Antwerp- tlie greatest of living Dutch painters - accompanied by four engravings of the highest order. " Prisoners ! " is concluded. Horse-farming in Kentucky.with especial reference to the trotting-horee, is the subject of an interesting articie by Wm. H. Bishop. Col. Higginson continúes liis American History Series, with a chapter on the Kevolution, entitled "The Dawning of Independence," illustrated by Howard Pyle. Phil. Bobinson, under the title of "Saunterings in Utah," describes some wonderful curiosities in the neighborhood of Salt Lake. The editorial departments are full of timely and entertaining matter. The publishers anuounce the conclusión of "A Castle in Spain " in the November ïumbcr, and the beginning, shortly afterward, of a new novel of startling literary nterest, by Wm. Black, entitled " Judith Shakespeare," illustraled by Abbey.
