Against the Eastern skies an QngHlnly figure rises up like a iiiglitmare to the people of New England, and particularly to the citizens of the Comnionwealth of Masstchusetts. These political unfortunates are cursed with a State election every year, so they are íh a perpetual turmoil and gain but little rest, stirred up by rival factions, ambitious candidates and conflictiug parties. This year they are in a dilemma as to whether or 110 tliey shall be able to throw off Butler, the dread incubus weighingupon theni. Benjamin F. Butler is a man of strong will, abundant resources of mint and mind and a large personal following. These things give him considerable power and they are not now being unemployed to effect h!s reelection- He is a man of determination and is unscrupulous as to methods used to gain desired ends. Thus because of lus well known penchant towards chicanery the lovers of old Massacliusetts deern it no hoi:or to be repres&ited by him at tlieir head. Last year, after many and repeated trials Butler was carried into the Governor s chair by the tidal wave which swept the country. This year, the best people are putting forth every honorable effort to drive back the flood and leave him stranded on the sands. He understands that if he can get this elèction it will put him in sight of the White House. Consequently no money or strstagem will be spared to gain the piïze. But opposed to him and his wiles is the determination of those who truly love the State, and with Mr. Robinson as a leader the chances are somewhat against the bold usurpen
