All along the line of stocks last week there was a heavy decline, but this week more confidence is being shown and the market has materially strengthened. Aftcr the matter had become a persistent uuisance, if notadownnght swindle, the pension attorneys, who of late have become very numeróos, have been cliecked by the Secretary of the Interior. Many of them have been suspended and will be disbarred if the improper prac tices are proven against theni. It is cliarged that "enormous frauds have been perpetrated on appiioants for pensions" by certain parties. Asc harges have been repeatedly made against some of the claim agents by those who have beeu induced by their carefully worded circulara to send thcm money nnd for which they never recelved an equivalent, the government now does well to throw some protection about tlie widows and helpless, who oftentimes haring no proper counselor, trust in promises of the agents to get them a pension. We beaome cognizant of some of these practices last summer and called attention to them in the columns of the Couiuek. Thus feelins that there was a wrong it is a source of gratification to see action taken looking towards its suppression.
