N. T. Home Journal, An intímate friend of Hawthorne's has related the following charming litlle anecdote, showing the circumstai.ces under which one of his best novéis was written: Une wintery day Hawthorne received at the office notification that his services would no looger be required. With heaviness of heart he repaired to his humóle home. His young wife recognized the change and stood watching and waiting for the silence t( be broken. At length h.0 faltered: "lam removed frarn office," She left the room: soon returned with fuel and kindled a bright lire with her own hands; next she brougbt pen, paper, ink, and sei theui before him, Then she touched the sad man on the shoulder, and, as he turnen to the beaming face, said: "Nowyoucan write your book." The cloud cleared away. The lost office looked like a cage from which he had escaped, The Boariet Letter was writtea, and n marvelous success rewarded tho author and his stout-heaied wife. A-n excellent authority in medicine recoinmends a little common sugar as a remedy for a dry, hacking cough, and gives scientiflc reasons forit. If troubied at night or on iirst waking in the raorning, have a litlle cup on a stand close by the bed, and take half a teaspoonful; thi will be of benefit when cough syrups fail
