Margare! Brent, said John L. Thomas in a tostare beforo the Maryland His torical Society, was the first woraan in America to claim the right to yoto. She landed in Si. MaiVs City on Iho St. Mary's River in Ï638. She (vas conneoted wKh Lord Baltimore either by blood or marriage. Leonard Calvert, Lord Baltiniore's brother, suddeuly prostrated on his death bed, and not having time to make his will, said to Margaret Iirent: "Take all and pay all." Theu he asked for a private conference wiih hor, and she receied his dyitg words. She took the Governor's house and lived in it. As Leonard Calvert was agent for lord Baltimore, she claimed control of all rents, issues, and profits of Lord Baltimore. The court conñrmed her in this posiüon. She claimed that she had the right to vote in the Assembly as the representative of Lord Calvert, and also of Lord Baltimore. She claimed, not one, but two votes. One January 21, 1648, wheu the legislators assembled at Fort St. Johns, she demanded her fight to vote as a member of the General Assembly of the State of Marylacd. It was denied her
