"Is a man safe f rom these fcllows any place?" "Well, it seema not. When they have the cheek to go right into the i. M. C. A. room to try their bold schemes it does look like bold work." The last speaker was a prominent iron manuíacturer in this city, and being known to the Jlerald reporter, who had happened to overhear the remark, he was asked íor the story. "I was at a temperance praycr meeting at Farwell Hall one cvening, and while there I spoke on 'Faith.' Át the close of the meeting two welldressed chaps stopped me as I was about starting for home, remarkingthat they wanted to congratúlate me on my address. They had conducted a meeting on Lake street a few evenings before, they said, at which the topic had boon tlie olie I had juot epoken on 'Faith.' One of them told me a littla incident to illustrate the power of faith. He said he had needed money to pay his rentbut hadn't a nickel. In his extremity he prayed for help. ïhe next morning as he went down street a man tapped him on the #rm and gave him sixteen dollars, just the amount needed to pay his rent, remarking that he looked like a man who needed monev. The tale was pretty 'fishy,' " contiiyièd the speaker, "but before I had a chance to say a word the other fellow chimed in with the remark that he needed some money. I don't remember now whp.t he wanted it for, but he said he had prayed for it the preceding night, also that morning, and,' although he hadn't received the money, yet would continue to pray for it until itcame. At this the fitst fellow thrust his hand down into his pocket and haulcd up a bond, which he foreed into the other cbap's hands, telling him to raise money by pledging that as security, if the cash couldn be i raised any other way. Of course, tho fellow at once suggested that I let him ! have fifty dollars, retaining the bond as security, but I didn'taccommodate him, and a few days later I heard of tho rest of these same fellows for plaving a ! confidence game somewhat similar. This is what made my friend and mvself i ask if thore's any place on earth where these fellows can't be found." And the gentleman deftly jumped on the platform of his car as it rolled past, leaving the gatherer of news to wonder, like himself, if conlidence men were not apt to try tneir wiles upon good old St. Peter keeping the hcavenly portals. - i Viicago Hcrald. ++-+ - A fortnight ago a man walked into a Germán jeweler's shop in London, whose wife only was at the counter, and pocketed (as he thought, unseen by her) a couple of watches. Presently her i husband entered, and, while the thief tood unconsciously at the door, thinking of what he should steal next, she : gave in Germán a descriptjon of what had happened, to her spouse. Whereupon, without the least fuss, orsomuch as an unpleasant word, he beckoned a ' policeman aud gave the one-languaged individual into custody.
