Some level-headed editor has evolved the following, which is floating about arnong our exchanges. It is so exceedingly well put and will be of so mucli interest to inany of our contributors that we are constrained to publish it entire: "It is au unwritten law, well understood in journalisin, tliat no editor is under the alightest obligations to give a reason for acceptance or ïion-acceptance of a manuscript. He is not calta) upon to write a private critique on the article to the autlior of it. Ilia acceptance or rcjection is an absolute and unquestionable fact. Amoug amateur writers this does not seem to be understood. All subeclitors and reporters understand that it is au unjustiüable impertincnce to ask the managing-editor for reasons for not pubiishing any matter submittcd to iiis judgment. üutside wrlters and aspiring amateurs rarely seem to comprehend tliis trutli, and their transgressions are largely from ignorance rather tliau inattention. The nature of editorial work requires absolute power of decisión in order to preserve the unities of the journul the editor conducts."
