In au absence of twentylh e days, durwhich period we traveletl nearly thiityeeven liundred miles, we were able by the Central standard time to have the exact time at every city visited, without cuanging our watch or fi#uring a difference of longitude. We were on eighteeu different railroadsand iive diflereut steain ship lines, the time of all of whlch it was uever necessarj' to nsk, for we had it lo a minute. VVitli a railway guide and a re Hable time-piece one can travel thousands of miles without the confusión or mistakes likely to occur from a dependence upon tlie answers of ignorant or careless railroad men hotel clerks nul porters. This sj-stem most of the railroads of the country have adopted to the ir complete aatisfaction. Whereas, formeily twenty railroads were running into a city each with a time of its own and there was great confusión thereby, now all have one time and have straight connections which the travelers is sure of making. So the railroads will retain this admirable system, while tbe towns along tlie lines are gradually coming to t. It is in the South where we naturally look for conseiTatifin and slowness of iiiiproveineiits but it ma3r be said to tlieir credit that in this respect they advanee with the mareta of prosrress. For uearly all the best of the Southern cities have the Standard time and lind it working smoothly. There is no frlotlon where all use it, and it inconven enees no one; while on the other hand, its conveniences very many, ind in the course of a short time, saves the great majority of us from much worry, confusión and mistake.
