Tuaiuuiiiiw uounty lias a population of nearly 45,0(J0, and a valuation of $31,000,000. The most of its land is rich, tillable, and under good cultivation. lts people are well-to-do, intelligent, and esterprlilng. They have builded for themselves a palatial Court House, but tiiey suffer to exist and to be in continua] use a jail so miserable that we hesitate whether to cali it a " eonundrum," an "iipology," or a "rat-trnp." It wiis a ffood building once, but that was "Uefore tlie War." Now wilh a slight cane the mortar can be readily plcked out, and when you kick the rotten post to see liow weak they ure the warder cnutions you not to kick too hard for fear they will tunible down. Witli a jiil so dilapidated as that do our eomfortable and easy-going citizens and farmers feel their welfare, their property or their lives gnarded from desperate and dangerous men confined therein ? Do they nol doem it ansafe so Ineecurely to lock up criminal, for liberty is precious to thein, bat threatenlng to the houseuoldurs ï Should not iucreased protection from the outbreak of the kwles, to say uothing of the pridc in a new and suiUible Structuro, be an overbalancu to the snmll unioiint wliicli wotild come from each taxpayei ? Tlien, loo, a new jail should be votcd for nnother renon, It has been condemued by the State Board of Chariiies and Correctlone; by the sanltary comniissions, by the öupervifors, by the sherill', and by the press of the eounty. There aie thosü who have looki'd into the matter and best know the crylng want for a decent place for the confliiement of tbose avaitlllg trial. We do not by any means advocate giving them elegant and luxuriouu qnartert, but as they arn human creatures we must treat tliem humanely. Aë they are not all guilty, until tried and convictcd, they do not, Deoitoarily need to be penncci together in tiltil, vermtn, rotten ncss and iqualor. The votersof Waslitenaw COlinty will not do their duty unets they vote for a decent and respectable jail.
