Prices for Staples, with ono ot two exceptions, are Iow, and the (Iemand is liglit, and tliere isno prospect of a revival in the near future. Farmers throughout the "West and Northwest are well on in planting, and reporta as to progress of the winter plant and spring seediug are almost eutirely favorable. The most conservativo reporta place the increased acreage in Dakoto at twen live per cent. Pacific coast advices promise au enormous gain in the wheat uarvest as coinpared with 1SS3. This, however, wHl be subject to the possible droughts of later inontns, if not to some doubt basod on previous overesti mates from that quarter. Iron is dull and unchanged in price. Makers claim, however, that the light domand is holding down stocks. Dry goods have been quiet. Tiie demand forstaple cotton goods is less, though prices liave been iirmly held. The jobbers' trade lias been only fairly satisfactory. Cotton contraéis havo been less active. Trading In wool has been chiefly in small lines for cnrrent consumptlon, and the general market lias favored buyers. I'rovisions liave been very dull, and have fallen away and reacted again in sympatliy with wheat. On Thursday and yesterday tliere was a raarked advauce In prices of wheat options, followed by spot prices. June wlieat touched S1.12. The advanee (in part tlie taking advautage of an oversold market) Is largely based on the notiou that all of tho available good wheat wül bo wanted at home before the new erop comes in. The gain iu spot wheat for the week is U?í@10c per bushel. Esports were checked. torn was slower in movemont. Thero were Iö4 failures in the United States reported to Bradstireel' s during the last week, as compared with 156 in tho preceding week, and witli 186, 105 and 102 respectively in the corresponding weeks of 1883, 188-3 and 1881. About Si per cent. were those of small traders whose capital was loss than $5,000. Cauada had seveuteen, a decreaso of five.
