Since tbe reoent terrible acúient of the sinking of' tbe steam ship Florida in mij ooean with nearly all on board we under stand not a fuw who had passage engaged to go abroad this sumiuer, have thrown it up and have dccided not to take the risk. Among them are several froin this county. Now, this is not particu'arly a ruisfortniie for the country, as by iheir staying at lume thousands of' dollars an kept here wbiuh otherwke would be spent Europe. Ilowever, froni another point of reasoning it would seem that the present time would be far the safest time that one could take such a trip, for with so feaiful a catastrophe ('resh in the minds of the seamen and offlcers they are not now like'y to sleep easily at their poslp. The passengers themselves beiug more anxious would demand cl iser vigilance than at a time wlien their fears had been lulled to repose by a long period devoid of accidents. It is true a collision at sea is u horrible thing, for even if one can swiin it is a long way to shoro, yet we believe fewer are drowned at sea than are killed by accidents on the rail. In one of' those iuimense ron steani ships one can f'eel as safe as on the rail car. Iu the one case the passenger at night as he stows himself' away in his narrow bunk, sninetinies thiriks there is only a plank between hiiu aud the chilling water. The strongest of' the steamers is only a toy to be tossed up and duwn by the arms of a Titan; the largest of thcm is only a speek in a b in:d less oeean. Yet the tiny little engine of man boldly plows its fearless way across three thousand miles of raging noain and the Auaeiiean larids in Livcrpo'l in a week out froin New York as cool as he will step froin the train which has brought hiui across the continent. Many there be who dtlight to travel. Fear comes to thetn no more on the deck or in the car (.han in the dining hall of a hotel, for even there a little fiah bone in the tb roa t may do what fearful accidents have fatled do. As we recently heard a Florida "Crücker" say: "It is mighty resky and onsertin livin' anywhar." All one can do is to live straight and do right Then when Diath is ready he will take uswhelherwe are on the land or sea.
