"A report is in circulation tlmt Major Wm. C. Stevens, in hisconduct of the auüitor general's office, at Lansing, wholly disregards the iuteiests of soldiers, appointing civilians to clerkships in preference to soldiers. Tlie Bis Kapids Current shows the flimsiness of tliis charge by giving- the following facts : " Being in Lansing recently we took occasion to investiate tlie matter aud found the following to be tlie proportion of soldiers and civilians employed in tliat office. The whole nuraber employee! in the office, includinjr oíd experienced clerks who were Hiere wiien Oen. Stevens took possession, is C5, of whom il are soldieis or soldiers' widnws, or daughters and 84 are civilians. Major Stevens lias niaüe 11 appomtincnts since lie took possession of his office, eight of wliom were soldiers and three civilians.Six have resigned, two betng soldiers and lour civilians, and onc has been disebarg' ed. Fifty-twoof sixly-live are permanent clerks, half of whom are soldiers or soldiers' widows or daughters, and half civilians. Of the 18 temporary clerks, employ;d only d uring the busy season, six are soldien and seven civilians. Soldlera certainly cannot complain at the Kbera! treatment rcceive at the hands of our soldier auditor general, and the grand army boys eannot oomplain at his lidelity to the principies of their order, of whlcb lie is an houored nieniher, in giving soldiers' widows and orphan danghters cmployment in the state department ove.i whirh he has control.'
