These letters stand for the name of a flourUbtog J,adies' Greek-Letter society wliich lias a chapter in our university where, last week Saturday, was held tlieir BBDual convention and banquet. The history of this " Sorority," as it is terined, nuiy properly be given injbriof', becau3e its fouiuler was one forinerly wellknown in this city. President E. O. Haven, liaving resigned his position here, was after a brief term at Evanslon called to the Chancellonblp of Syracuse University in New York. He moved tliere in 1871, and in that year his daiighter, Francés E., together with some associates, fonnded the Alpha chapter of Gamma Phi Beta. Their constiUition we understand, was front ilie versatile pen oí the Doctor himself. In 1881 the Chapter at the U. of M was Btarted, and sinee that time it bat developed until now, like the Muses, its active membenhlp is represented by th! mystic nuinher nine, while tne total membership of the society is about 300. lts objects ara to combine üterary culture with social improvement. Tliere is one other sorority at the university, the Kappa Alpha Theta, established in 1S79. The two, although rivals, entertain i generous emulation and together occui)y about the same field ainong the ladies of the literary departincnt that the best of the college fraternities do for ihe boys. On Friday therc arrivcd as delegates f rom Syracuse the Misses ]?annister,Fuller and Price. A rcception was givcn them that evenir.g at the society house and Saturday even ing the convention banquet was spread at the house of Treasuier Harrison Soule. No reporter was allowed at the mysterious conclave, but of courseit has leaked out that there was a rich repast followed by songs, toasts and the usual amount of chattering. The vifitors de[arted Monday delighted with their hearty reception.
