Moiulay nifjlit was the time set for the con.sidcrai.ion of the vexed questlon of lightinr, the streets of this city for the coming year, by the comtnon councll. Aiul for u wonder bc t said the aldermen were all there. The commtttee to wliom was referred the questlon reported throiigh its chairman, Aid. Lawrence, as follows. The commlttee composed of the general fund commlltee.and Ald.Luick and Viiiighun who Were added thereto by special resolution of tlie councll, liave had under conslderation the dtffersnt proposals submitted to the eounctl by the Ann Arbor gas lightcompany and tho Vandepoele electric light coinpauy, which proposalB were heretofore relerred to tbiH committee for examimition and coasideratiou. Il 1 the juüginent of the commlttee that it is for the best interestH or the city at the present time lo accept the proposal of the Ann Arbor gas Iight eompany, and they do recommend that such proposal be accepted by the council, and tbai the otiy altorney be dlrected to draw a contract between the city and the Ann Arbor fías Iight light conipany, embodying tliecomütlous thereof. Tlien the music eommeuced in eirnest, and ppposition to the adoptlOD of the report cropped out in a llvely onanner. Tlie discussion was oorried on tor thegascompany principally by Alil. Lawrence, and in opposition by Mayor Hariïman and Aid. HelnzmRn and Khodes. The argumenta pro and con were too numerosa to giveinour columns. A vote being ordered the reeull was not the famous 8 to 7, but 7 to 7, cousequently the adoptlon of the report was lost. Tlie vote stood : Aye - Aid. Lulck, Henderson, Kerns, Hiscock, Lawrence, Ware, Vauglian - 7. Nay - Aid. Walz, Heinman, Kisele, Rhodes, Bifrgs, Mayor and Kecorder - 7. Then it was proposed that the commlttee should niake a contract with tlie electric llght eompany for the use of as niany lampa aa they could supply, and have the gas eompany furnisli the "balance. Tliis, Mr. Uouglass, of thelatter coni]iany, who was present, decidediy vetoed. He wonld listen to nothing of the kind. The gas eompany would furnish all the lights for the strCets or none. Then a motion was carried for the appointment of a commlttee to atcertain the cost of having the gasoline street liglit eompany furnish tlie neeessary lampe which the g;is eompany refused to supply, and the followinjt were appointed assucli committee: Aid. Helnzman, Hiscock, j Khodes, Lawrenee and Vaujfhan. A proposltion from the Vandepoele electric Iight eompany to lljfht their lampe two ÖDtiday nlghta of each month for $5 per night, was accepted. Accordin-; to a proposiüon of the latter eompany they afreed to supply ten Tghts sufticient to do avvay with 30 gas lainps. The pulse of the people beats about all one way on this business, and that s for the adoption of the electric lights a3 far as possible, and extensión of the same as rnpldly as possible. But the lights should be lit Sunday evenings when there is no ïuoon, and on week day nights anti] 11 or 12o'clock. If the gas eompany refuses to furnish the balance of the lamps needed, by all ineans give the gasoline eompany the privilege. The gasoline lamps about the city are tended to in a better mannes and are quite as satisfactory. Electricitj' and gasoline is the winning card, gentlemen, in this contest, if the people are to be consulted.
