The riuging of the fiie bell stiirtled the people of the city Monday afternoon at about 4 o'clock. Following the englne we brought up at the house of Lndwlg Seyler, on Fifth st., south of Paokard, and the flamea had just got nlcely under way. But the li remen soon drowned them out, and saved the property with but little damage. The lire caught from a stove door's ilying open In n student' room, while no one was in. The house is a new one, and owned by Mis. Hanser, wlin had an insurance coverinj; loss. A good word OUght to bc sald in this connection for the boys of the new Union hook and ladder company, who performed their part well, as did in tact all the fireraen. The society of Sons of St. George meets at Cropsey's hall on the lirst and third Wednesdays of each month. The ladies of the Methodist chuicli will hold a "bii.ar" iu the lecturc room of that churcli on Wednesday eveninjr. Dec. 17. A very large variety of gooda useful and ornamental will be offered for sale. Especial attention will be aviven to articles suitable for Christmas presents and for the holidays generally. Some novel and exceedingly interesting features may be looked for. The baztr will be open afternoon and evening, and slipper will be servet!.
