Ratlicr surprisingly, but not entirely unexpectedly, the state ticket for Justice of the Supreme Court and Rugente was carried by the democrats. However it is no sin that Michigan is a democratie state, for a combination of causes a ffected it which mlglit have been avertcd. One of the reafons for Judgo Cooley's (Jefeat was that he had received the nomination of the Prohibitionists, illustrating again tlie fact that whom tliey wish to help they had better let alone. Inasmuch as by their course thls country has been turned over to democratie hands, thousands of good republicana feel that whatever and whoeveris endorsed by the thiid party is liabie to suspicion. Ho they put on slips. Another potent factor la this was the Evening News. It is a paper of the wideft circulation, ably edited and fearless in tone. It is taken by the masses of the people, who take it home evenings and read it all through by the fiieside. It Las had a continuous series of articles on Judge Cooley's decisions whlch rightfully or wrongfully have been of immense influence. Independent In politics, Uat very fact gives itsopinions weight; while a boldness of utterance is conviucing to lts readers. For the same reasons which acted against the head of the ticket the rest of it had to suffer and all went down together. But the repúblicas) party has no reason whatever for despair of the future. Next tline, wlth better organization and (ewer complications we may be sure of success.
