Last Thursday there passed away one of the men who has been idenüfied with lie interests of Ann Arbor for many 'e;irs, Hon. James McMahon. He hd een alling tor sotne time with cáncer on he head. und his deatli was anticipated at any moment. The deceased was bom d Ireland, County Clare, April 4th, 1819, eceiving a partlftl college course at Inlis, but linanciul reverses compelled him 0 cive UP tue course bef ore it was comtleted, and In 1837 he sailed for the "new world," as America was thea called, coming direct to Michigan. He first settled in Dexter where lie renained several years, serving as a justice of the peaoe for that village from 18-16 to 1850, at whicli time he was chosen county clerk, and removed to Ann Arbor. Life was commenced by learning the blacksmith's trade, at which he worked for a time, but continued his studies, and took a lively interest in the aftairs of the town and the nation. Taking an active interest in politics lie united with the Whig party, with which he remalned until the republican party was organized in 1854, when he identified himself with that organization, to which he has always remained loyal and true. Quite often lias lie been chosen to represent the people in different positions. He was a member of the 19th and 20th legislatures; county clerk two terms; was provost marshal of the county two years during the war; member of the board of supervisors in 1 857 - '05 -"09, chairman twice; andjustice of the peace about 18 years. Had been a member of the bar tor many yeiirs, and in every walk of llfe vas respected for his integrity and pprightness. He leaves four children to mourn lus loss, and who have the deep sympathy of the public in their sorrow. His funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 6[ o'clock.
