Owing to tlie mixed condition of things in Ohio there bad been, prtvious to yesterday's eleetion, some doubts as to the results. The interest in the returns is National, becuise ït not only was to teil in positivt' language how the people like Democratie rule, but Ït also decided the iiL-xt Moatorahip of the state. For this lffiislature will be called upon to elect a U. S. senator in John Sherniau's place. He is au eminent statesman and it gives Republicana everywhere pleasure to lenow that lie will uudoubtedly be able to sucieed hiniself. The tkird party aregreatlydlaappolnted at the result, for they had predicted large gaing. As it is, they are fizzling out, so that they are 110 longer au important factor in the state. The signal victory in Ohio tnakes New York sure for the Republicana. In that state the dieappolnted Independents have had euoigh of Democratie pretensions and deceits and are coming; back where they can feel at home. Tuey are welcome. One thiog tlie Ohio election indicates is that president is bttter than his party. We believe he is attempllog to fiive civil service i fair chance, but that disgusta the party, as is shown by their upsithy in yesterday's electiou and their actioo ia New York of putting up Ilill, the enemy of civil service and the expartner of Tweed. Cleveland evidently bas good intentions but he is surrounded by a crowd which is out of sympathy with the :igc and with American ideas. Thai his incxperience in public matters and with broad statesmen puts him at the mercy of designing poüticians who care more tor the ipoila than for the welfare of their country. The rainy weather of yeaterday usually would have made a Democratie day in Ohio, but the b'hoys did not enthuse. They do not see what is the use of a Democratie victory if they do not get fat jobs thereby. Henee even the ruin did not save them. Formerly it was whisky that paralyzed them. ïiow even the rain water does the business. They are getting weak Indeed.
