Taxes are soraetliing in which the people are always interested. They scan the lists, and grumble at this and growl at that, but finally pay them, avowing that "if things keep going on this way, the country will go to the everlasting shades of sheol." But soine way the country keeps right on, the taxes are paid yearly, sometimes greater and sometinies less in amount than the years previous. The fact reraains, however, that in few countries in the world, are taxes go light as in this, and the cities the size of Ann Arbor that do not have raore than L per cent. on the assessed valuation to pay is the ezception, not the rule. Practically out of debt, wijn good county buildings and everything prosperous, the people of Washtenaw ought to be very thankful that they are so fortúnate. But tliis article was started with tlx purpose of giving our readers an idea ol what the taxes will be this year. Ol course they will be more than last year, fer two reasons. One reason is tliat lasl year was an exceptionally low year; an otlier reason is tliat laxes are alway; very much higher tlie next year the legislttture ineets. The amount of state taxes apportioned to this couDty is $01,309.68. This is the hijrliest it ba ever been. For the past few years Washtenaw bas paid the following ainounts of state taxes: 1880, $38,325.30; 1881, $42,395.87; 882, $37,818.20; 1883, $55,072.85; 1885, $33,360.62. So that the amount paid this year is $30,000.00 blgbei than last year. For the benefit of those of our readers who desire to know wliere their money goes, we give the different objects, and the amount each one will draw. The aggregate of real and personal property in the countyas equalized by the state board of equalization in 1881, was 30,000.000.00 dollars.
