Mr. Editor :- Will you correct the statement made in last week's CotmiKR tliat I had resigned my position in tlieM. E. church clioir. My tirne of office explred, and I simply declined being a candíate for the place. My reasons for so doing I need not state, as they are well utiderstood by tliose most intereated. Alvin W1L8EY. Akn Abbob, Oct. 12, 1885. The above is a specimen of wliat small tliings men will quibble over sometlmes. The writer of this letter was present at a meeting of the board of stewards of the M. E. Church last week and in the preseuce of thirteen persons declared his resgnution. Now he attempts to crawl out by saying he " declined being a candidato for the place." What is the difference between tweedledee and tweedledum, a resignation or a declination ? In a somewhat extended article upon the Chinese question, the Harbor Springs Rcpublican has th8 sensible paragraph: Tliere can never be any assimllatlon of Ainerlcausand Chinese. They have nothlng lu common and never can have, and thelr proper placéis In thelr uatlve country llke sonie other foreigners that mlgtit be named tuatdollttle lesa than Incite strikes, mobs etc. Whlle U is high time the general gov' ernment were awakenlng to the magnitude and importance of the Chinese question, it Is high time lt was constdertng other features of forelga Immlgration to thls country. There Is such a thlug as our lmmigratlon reeulatlons belna eutlrely to liberal. Thls may be the boasted "land of the free and the home of the brave," but lt was never lntended to be a sluiter for European paupers, nlhlllsts aud dynaraiters. Such proceedings as tbose in Rock Springs, Wyoming, recently, are to be condemned, but the bitter feelinK of workmen against the Chinese cannot bo overeóme, it is too deeply founded in justice to ever be wiped out. Even freedom can be abused and turned into slavery. Roswell P. Fowler, the New York millionaire, who wanted the nomination ior govenior of his state at tlie hands of the democratie party - as a stepping stone to the presidential nominatlon - aud failed to et It, refused the sop thrown to him of the second place on tbc ticket, and Gen. Jones, the scale man, stepped in the gap as an advertisingdodge for his business. He is the only soldier on the democratie ticket in that state this fall. While the republican ticket bas flre Midiera, and rlght worthy soldiere, too. Tlie old soldier who fought for the unlon must not expect much, however, from the party thut always opposed him when in tlie field, denounced him in their natlonal coiiventions, declared him a Lincoln hlrellng ud t northera raud-sill. It wnuld not be consistent with their history in the past. "With all your faulta I love you still," siy the New York mugwumps of the republican party in New York state, and they are sneaking bitck into the ranks as fast as they can get there. All of Mr. Cleveland's mugwunip appointments do not seem to attract them. They desert the ihlp now that they helped to win the battle a rear ago, because of its many rotten plankt ind general unseaworthiness. In fact, tliey found themselves in a crew entirely opposed to everything they bad revereneed and respected from boyhood up. It turned their thoughts toward tlie old republican craft that never mi anything but staunch and true, and they are mighty jrlad of a pretext to get back ngain with their old mates. '
