No play by Shakespeare, and indeed none in the Knglish language, has been so universally and uninterruptedly popular as " the Life and Death of King Kichurd the Third." Verplank in notinK the fact remarks tbat " few of Suakespeare's play paased through more than two or three edltioti8, as they orljrlnally appsured separately in the customary fonn of quarto pamphlets. Of ' Hamlet," which 8eems to have been the most popular of the other tragedies, there are but six of these cditions; whilo of 'Uioliard III. )etween 1597 and 1(534, wc have in addiion ti) the copies of the flrst two folios o less than eigbt separate editlong, still )reserved, and it is possible that there nav have been yet another, no longer exant." The play has kept perpetual posession of the stage since it was written, elther iu its primitive form, or as altered and adapted to the tastes of the times by Colley Cibber or by John Kemble. In one orother of these forms " Richard III " ias been the favorite character of all the minent English speaking tragedians rom Burhage, the original "crookback," who was klentified in hia day with the art, through the long succession of the nonarchs of the stage - Betterton, Cibber, Juinn, Garrick, Henderson, Kemble, Jooke, Kean, the eider Booth, John Wilkes and Edwin Jiooth, and niany Uliers. Mr. Keene uses the Colley Cib1er version. He wlll appear at the Ann Arbor Opera House Tuesday Ev'ng Nov. 7th U Richard III. which announeement will undoubtedly be received with inncli leasure by our people.
