A touclilng instance of instinct has jut been sent to us. Tlic writer saya : " I found a cockroach strugxlinjf In a bowl of water. I took half h peauut shell for a boat. I put him into it, giive him two wooden toothpicks for oars, and left liim. The next morning I visited him, and he had put a piece of white cotton threud on one of those toothpicks, and sat the toothpick on end as a sijfnal of distress. He had a hair on the other toothpick, and there that cockroach sat a fishlng. The cockroach, exhausted, liad fallen asleep. The sight.ruelted me to tears. I hadneyer to chew leather to get a aoul ; I wai born with one. I took that cockroach out.gave him a ipoont'ul of gruel and left. The animal never forgot my kindnefa and now mv house is chock full of cockroaches."-
