A good way tocommenoe the supprewton of Hiemal practlces whlch have been golng on rlght uader the noses of the councll, wouldbe to revoke the licene of the notorlousgambllng den, drinking hole, and resort for crooks of all sort on Ann atreet. It Is perfectly well knowu to many of the aldermen and to the pólice that there 1 gambllng every night and Sundaya In this place, that there Is au occaslonal cock flght ou Bunday, aiul Uiat the law is nlghtly vlolated there in the most flagrant nianner. If the aldermen waottotrln their sails to meet the rlsln tempest of popular lndlgnatlon, they can do no more polltio thing than to revoke thli llcense. The real fact is that there is no such thing as a license in this state in connection with the liqour trafile. This is generally known by men of ordinary intcllifience. We are aware that the couioion council has great powers in many ways, but wc had not supposed that even the board of aldermen, although prompted and directed by so able an authority on law poiuts as the Register, could revoke something that iwjver ex. isted I The publication of such a charge as the one placed at the head of this article is an ignorant attempt to injure, In the eyes of the community, a respectable body of men, and tho offort 8 none the less deserving of condemnation because ignorantly made. Before the editor of the Register ever becomes a "Sentlnel on the Watchlower" for those who believe in good order and honest gorernment, he will have to exhibit less raalice towards those who do not agree with hlm ; and develop a more intelligent comprehension of publifi questions before he attempts to instruct the
