Sorae use very curious argument?, but all come to the conclusión that capital punisliment is about right. We are very sorry that tliey think so. It is about 40 years ago tliat we went MBOBg our inhabitants with a petitioti, to comniute tlie ¦entenn of hanging a man named Cory, who shot (was accused of shooting) one Dunn, to iruprisonment ior life. Ai tliat time two of our ministers signed our petition: Father Collins, of the Roman Catholic church, and Father Miles, of the Universalist cliurcli. All the rest ref used. But Cory got iway, and capital punishment was repealed, and Michigan stood on the side of humanity ; but if our ministers and tbeir congregations shoulJ succeed, then the state has uot progress:d, but retrograded; wliicli, wc hope, may not be our record. The argument that crimináis foar buig ing more than imprisonmeut seems to be uutrue, for peoplc beem not to value l'fe very liigli. The papers' daily report of suicides, fainily ff uds, jealousy, duels und all manner of murders are coiuiuitleil, even in the states, where they hang crimináis, and the crimináis know that they will be hanged, if fotind guilty. But how many are found fjuilty. Kspecially if they have or control a large amount of money or property? And then, if one persun kills aiiother and the state kilis the one who survived, does that make the killing less? Do two wroiifl niake a right? Histoiy informs us, that in past ages lililí pric-t?, piiests, Pliarisees and scripture learned men, wcie in tiivor of cruel punishmi'iits (;i niajority), and it takes time lor their suceessors to advance to the platform of true huiiiaiiity as taught by that great, good Nazareen, wlio i honored and loved by evcry man or voman, who by his teachings, his learned to love his fillowmen. Perhaps some of our ministers consider it an honor, privilege or power to tand by the side of a condenmed fellow-belng and try to send bim to heaven or , before he is prepared, and before the law of God calla him to app ar before the judguient throne. Can the priest send him to heaven unprepared? But they prepare him! Remember when the WOman was brought before the hlgb priests for unlawful conduct and they referred her to Jesus, and as he looked up, all were gone and hc akcd lici : "fias anv one condemned thee?" ihe saW, "N.." "Neither do I. Go, and sin no more." He was true to humanity, even in danger, and flnn in spirit. His body is gone, but thanks be to God, his spirit lives in many
