The republican state committee liave dtcided to cali the state convention tor the nomination of state offlcers, at Grand Rapids, on Sept. lst. This will gin a 8hort, sliarp and decisivo campaign. Mr. F. C. Fadner, who lias purchased the Flint Democrat and Daily News, is m:ikini ihe former a very readable paper. He certainly givcs evidence of knowing of what a good weekly paper consiste. Duriiig ihe latter part of last week gevere stonns of wind visited several places in tuis state, and cyclones were plentifnl all over the western states. For an"off"year in politics t h:sopened np pretty windy. Of the press of tbis state net one has made greater advanccment than has the Howeü Eepublloao. It is briglit and sparkling, neat and clean, and ives evidence of good, consciencious work both mechanically and editorially. The Stair Bros. are climbing the stairs of sucres, tbat's certain. We do not believe in capital punUhment- but the law in Illinois recognizes that mode of punishment for certain crimes. The socialists or anarchists of Chicago, of wuom August Spies appears to be the leader, are guilty of murdering five policeman in that city and woundinjj many others, and they should receive the tull penalty of the law. In fiee Araerica we have no use for sucli men and the doctrine they preach would soon lead the country into a monarchy. To be f ree citizens of a free republic men must rigidly draw the line between liberty and license. Last Sunday, a. m., Uev. Mr. Hamsay, at the M. E. church preached an excellent discourse upon the I.abor Question. He paid labor a glowing tribute, and con. ceded its right to organization; any man had a right to unite with any society, either religiou?, pol'itical or social, so long as the society had Dot for its object anythlng detrimental to the well-being of the community in which he lived, or of the government which gave htm protection. Men had a right to say how (any hours they should work, and what compensation they were willing to receire; but they had no right to compel others holding different views to conform to their own. Strikes are dangerous and boycotts contemptible, and both are unAmerican. He concurred in Grand Master Powderly'8 good advice that by arbitration the laboring man and the employer should settle their diflerences. Labor is indispensable to the being of great nation?, and c:pital, that employs labor, is indispensable to it; each is dependent upon the other; and the remuneration of labor and the per cent. of capital must be amicably adjusted. The laws of emlgration and of citizenship in ttiis country ought to be readjusted so that the labor market couid not be so easily flooded in this country by the laborers of foreign countries. In other words the American laboring man should be protected by the government the same as are the producís of his industry. But to the socialist and the anarchist in America there should be the gallows, and the speaker thought that August Spies and the gang who recently killed five policemen in Chicago ought to be hung, to which many honorable men will say amen. The sermón was an excellent one, and we wish more of the laboring element could have lic ud it than did.
