The long-deferred, long longed-for, and anxiously awaited July meeting of the common council occurred Monday evening, having been deferred becauae of the festivites of the the 4th on the 5th. Tlie rneetniji was characterized by some of the disgraceful scenee oocosionally reported from the Detroit council by the papers ol that city, and lt begins to look as if we had an Alderman Jacobs (on a small scale) in our council. There was at least one full hour f time wasted in inaudlin talk that was neither to the point nor understood by either the council, or the talker liiniself, the matter of gasoline street lighting being the bugbear that set the menagerie oft'. PRESENTATION OF PETITIONS. A communication from J. Q. A. Ses8ions calling the attention of the couucil to the dangerous condition of the sidewalk in front of premises owned by the heirs of Mrs. Chamberlain, on William street, and asking immediate action thereon. Referred to the sidewalk committee with power to ct. Petition of A. L. Noble, Dr. J. N. Martin, D. F. Schairer and 18 others asking for an electric lamp to be erected at the corner of División and Liberty streets. Relerred to the street lighting oommlttee. The bids for lighting the gasoline lamps of the city for the coming year were tlien retid by the Recorder as folio ws: From Ok. Button, offering to furnish gasollne, light and extinguish and keep in repair for 84 cents per lamp per month From Harkins & Dignan to furnish gasoline, light, extinguish, keep in repair furnish new burnera and posts as required, the same number of uights as the ;as lights, for 95 cents per post per month. Or at SS cents per post and the city do the repairinï. From Milo E. Qould, to liaht, cxtin guUh, clean, furnish gasoline and new Immers seventeeii nights for 75 cents per post per month, the city to repair, ür for 85 ceuts and he will do all tlie repaiiing, etc. Froin Orvillc W. Sage to furnish everything na abovo, repair, etc., etc., to light for 7f centdper post per month (and light all dark nights at same rate), wants contract for two years. AU1. Keatiug moved that the bid o llarkins & Dignan be accepted. Aid. Swift, moved as an amendment that the bid of O. W. Sago be accepted The recorder moved as a substituto that all the bids be referred to the street lighting committee with power to act. The ayes and nays being called for re8ulted as follows: Yeas- Aids. Allmendlnger, Neltlmmmer Walz, Herz, Martin, Ware, Steere, Mayor and the Recorder. Nays- Aids. Roblson, Kenrns, Hwift, Po land, and Keattng. H Yens, 9; nays, 5. Aid Swift moved that the street lighting committee be dlscharged. The ayes and nays resulted: Ayes- Aids. Keatlng, SwKt, Poland and Nay's- Aids. Roblson, Allmendlnger, Walz. Herz, Kennis, Neithaminer, Martin, Steere Mayor and Recorder. Ayes, 4 ; nays, 10. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES. Aid. Martin offered the following : Resolved, That the opening of Washington street be referred to the general street commlttee wlth power to act. Carrlud. Br Aid. Kearns : Whereas, The City of Ann Arhor, Michigan, has receutly bought prcperty on Block Eleven of Onnsby & Page's Addltlou, known as the O'Niel property, for the purpose of opening a street from Detroit street to the new passenger station uov belng erected Dy the Mlchlitan Central Kallroad Couipany; therefore, Be It Resolved, That the City Engineer be, and U hereby directed, to make a survey locatlng such parchase, a survey for said "oonteraplated Htreet.aud that he report to thls Counoll a grade of sald Btreet, the amount of earthwork requlred for the same, and all the needed inlorraatlon for constructlug said si rei't in a manner to best serve the needs of the public who wlll use the same. Carrled. Mavor Kobison brought to the attention of the council the coming Saengerfest and thought that the city should take gome interest in the matter, as it was something that would result in the benefit of the city, and suggested that the gum of $500 be appropriated to aid the enterprise. Aid. Allmendinger offered the following after a few retuarks explanatory thereof: Resolved, That the aura of 8500 be appropriated as a guarantee rund, to be pald to the nnauclal offlcer of the Saeugerbund in case a deflclency shall exlst afur the Fest has been held in thls city on the ltlth, 17th and 18th of August next. Wulch was adopted. Aid. Kearns, froni the general street cnminittee, reported an offer of $25 for removing the old O'Niel building on the city's property on Detroit street, and asked instniction of the council. Aid. Martin moved that the bid be accepted by the general street couimittee. Carried. Aid W:vre moved that the vote disallowiiifi the liill of Saín Taylor bu reconsidered. Which was lost. The recorder moved that the bill bc referred to the committee on finalice. (Jarried. Adjourned.
