Alexander I., Prince of Bulgaria, ia th Bon of Princc Alexander of Battenberg, brotbor of the late Empresa of Russia, and was born April 5, 1857. Hi mothcr, a Conntess von Kauck, was the daughter of a former Tolish Minister of War, and was raised to the rank of Princcss on her morganatic mnrriago with Prince Aleinnder ol Hesso. The subject of this sketch sorved during the last Turco-Russian war in the Rusaian army, was present with Prince Charles of Rouniania at the fitmcjiis ïiege and battle of Plevna, and croseed the Balkans with (ieneral Gourko. Atter the campaign he returned to Germany and served in the Life Guards. He was nlected hereditary Prince of ]Sulgaria bv the Assembly of Notables, at Tirnova, on April 29, 187Í), ar.d by vote of the Grard National Assembly he was, on July 18, 1881, invested with extraordinary legisla tive powers. On November 14, 1885, King Milan of Servia declared war against Bulgaria. Prince Alexander imniediatelv assumed personal command of his troops, and defeated the Strvians at various points. Peace was rostored, but Aleiander had incurrcd the displeasurc of the Czar of Russia, to whose machinations the revolt of August 22 i due.
