It was a grand custom introducid by the New Englanil fathert, to set, aside one day of the year, after the harvests were all over and the ycur's work completcd, to give tlianks unto the Giver of a'l good for the tender mercies bestowed. The history of this nation is one of iininterrniJtedprosperityfrom the close of the revolution to today. War has thrown a heavy cloud over it twice since tlien, in 1812 "and 18G0, but the nation continued to prosper even during those dark days Thanksgiviug is an Americ;ui day, and It is a day that evcry American ouglit to observe. If he cannot observe it in returning thanks as custotnary in our churches, he c:m observe itby doiug some little deed of kindness. He can help soine one who is weaker than himself. It is not alone by prnyer and praise that the day can be approprlately observed, but ia acts and deeds. Give a helptdfC hand to some poor, despondent soul ; give assistance to the deserving poor, give soinething, if only a kind word to your neighbor.
