Another meeting favoriug tne iree reading room project was held at the city hall last evening. The attendance was füirthough not what it ought to have been considering the important work in hand. Rev. Dr. Ryder presided and A. L. Noble acted as secretary. J. E. Beal, f rom the executive committee, reported verbally that at a previous meeting of the committee it had been deekled to rent rooms for the purpose of establishing free reading roomc, and to provide Euch games as might meet the approval of the projectors. To put this on a firm foundation it was estimated that it would be necessary to raise the sum ot $1,200. This, the committee thought, oufrht to be readily done. On motion the report was accepted and adopted, and the committee authorized to proceed to businese at once. When you are called upon to frive for this cause don't be bashful. A more worthy cause never received your ald. This project has succeeded in Jackson, Toledo iind other citie3, and there is no reason why it should not be the means of rioing a great deal of good here iu Ann Arbor. A subscriptlon paper was sturted and a good start made. Mr. Hearst, the democratie California millionaire, whom the governor nppointed to till the vacancy made in the senate last session by the death of Senator MilIer, will not go back to the senate this ¦winter. The legislature elected in bis place a Mr. Williams, a merchant who is friendlyto the Central Pacific rallroad, to serve out Mr. Miller's term, which expires in March. The legislature, which meets this winter, will elect a senator for the full term, and the Central Pacific will do lts utmost to elect its man. Mr. Hearst, whose wife Is socially ambitious, and who liimself enjoyed his experience at Washington last winter, will fight the railroiid, backed by certain $30,000,000 t'mu lor whom he (lid good it-rvice as a miniiifr insuec'or. Thisclash of democratie niillionaire8 for a seat iu the U. S. Senate will be watched with interest.
