The above is a picture of the gentleman whom The Couriek brought out as a candidate for regent of the Unl versi ty, a gentleman wlio needs no introduction to our citizens, having spent liis boj'hood days and young manhood in our city. We are pleaseil to nole that his name is being received with great favor throughout the State. Thcre is this difTerence between tin' rfsultsof prohibition and high license law?. WKh prohibition perhaps one quarter of the people are iu favor of It; one quarter as strongly oppose it, while one half the citizens are indifferent - not being aöecttd either way. With prohibition the efforts of tlie one quarter are met by those of their opposers, while the indifference of the balance of power helps the law breakers. On the other band, he who pays, say $1,000 license helos the law by watching to see that nounlicensed parties are competing against him unfairly. He is also more careful not to break the excise laws hitnself and to run the risk of losing his iiivestinent by losing his license. And still the democratie house of representatives refuses to pass the coast defense bil), recently passed by the senate. To hesltate in this respect' is cowardly. The coast defenses of the United States are utterly worthless, leaving us at the nuroy of one of the most powerful natloni in the world. Any day war may ruMilt, :ind in our present defenceless state millions of dollars worth of property would be destroyed and thousands of lives lost. The democratie papers are pleaseil to draw a picture of the republicau party attempting to carry rum on one ghoulder and water on the other. The democratie party attempts to carry mm on both shoulclers, hut the (Iemand from its stomach is so great that the ghoulder buiden is very light. The Dtimocrat need not fret over the owner ot the post-ofïice, opposing free delivery. Just keep your shirt on, Henry, for free delivery will save said owncr many a dollar for broken glass and other damages oaused by rushes, etc, and will In no way damage his business. When it is knowa that the master mind that inspires many of the articles published in the Deinocrat, U a heavy owner of water woiks Btock, ( at 50 cents on the dollar?) the constant cry for drinking fouiitains to be " located in every vvard in the city," can be readily explained. In "Circular No. 3," issued by the State W. C. T. U. in rcference to the prohlbitory amendment, these words are used : "The contest is non-partisan." The talies are not ours. This is especlallv referred to the Ypsilanti Commercial and other prohibition organs. "I dld it with my little hatchet! I chopped out the submission amendment ! I am going to carry the amendmeut ! I shall hold the offices then ! Great am I!" This is a sample of the edltorials now to he fouinl In iilmost any of the jirohihitiun j.iijpi-r-.
