One great event usually follows anothcr and that is true In tbeatrical matteis as well as in other tilinga. Barrett with hls crusli lagt evening will be followed by the grand and beautiful Modjeska next Tuesday evening, March 15th. She will present the maniticent play of Adrienne Lecouvreur, and is supported by a company ei rare attainments. The play of Adrienne LeConvreur has a peculiar history. It was written for the great Kachel by Scribe and Legouve, and was once rejected by her, she liavlng formed a prejudice against it, but Legouve was not to be overeóme by trifles. Ile asked permission to read the plece in KHchel's own parlor, before a few of her most intimate friends. This request wus granted, and the outcome is told In Legouve's own words : "In the second act, Adrtennt makes her flrst uppearauce holding in tier baud the part of Badaget, whlch Bhe Is studying. The Prince de Bouillion approaches her and observe, gally : " You stlll appear to bc looking rorsomethlng ; ¦ lint is It, raay I askf' '1 am looking lor the truth.' sbe replies 'Bravo 1 Bravo ! ' exclalmed Jules Janlu, the great crltlc aud her frlend who was present. Oh ! ' gald I to myself, ' he must Ie my frlead, for surely the words do not merlt a bravo.' Kachel, too, was a Hule startled, and gave Jamn a look that seemed to say : ' Whatl atraltor herel Forlunalely the traltor's opinión soon became everybody else's oplntun. Kachel, surprlsed and very niuch embarasged at not Jlndlng herself fllled wlth her former dtsdaln, made but a feeble reslstaoce agalnst the general impresslon, and at the end of the gecond act even chttned In wlth the general sentiment by saying, Well, I alwayg thought ihere was somethlng In that gecond act. This was her la-t semblauce of defeoce of Uefence. From the very beginning of the ihlrd act she rldded herseli of her former prejudlcus as completely as pollttclans do of impopular oplnlous. " At the end of the flfïh act she actually threw herself on my neck, exclalming wlth gtreamtQg eyes: " ' How have you kept yourself off the stage?" l'he reader had sa ved the author.
